Porta Potty Rental for Home Remodels
For most home remodels and additions, one portable toilet on the driveway is enough. It gives the crew a restroom that is not inside your house, and it gives your family a backup if the remodel takes your only bathroom out of service. Victory Portable Restrooms delivers from Murrieta, services the unit every week, and charges from $189 per 28 days plus a delivery and pickup fee.
Who orders the porta potty, the homeowner or the contractor?
Either one can. On remodels it is often the homeowner, and we set up plenty of rentals that way. You do not need a contractor's account or a business name.
Ask your contractor before work starts. Some include a unit in the bid. Others assume the crew will use a bathroom in the house, and you find out on the first morning. If the bid is silent, decide now who is renting it.
The legal duty sits with the employer. California requires employers to provide toilets and washing facilities for their workers on construction jobs (Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526). You, as the homeowner, are choosing where that toilet will be: inside your home or outside it.
When does a remodel need one?
The only bathroom is being torn out. A one-bath house with a bathroom remodel has no working toilet from demolition until the new one is set. A unit outside covers the household for those weeks.
The water or sewer is off. A repipe, a sewer line replacement or a septic repair can shut down every fixture in the house for days.
The kitchen is gutted and the crew is large. Demolition, plumbing, electrical, drywall, cabinets, counters, tile and paint all pass through. That is a lot of strangers walking down your hallway.
You want the crew out of the house. This is the most common reason. Workers come in with dust, mud and tool belts. A unit outside means the door between the work area and your living space stays shut, which matters with children, pets or someone working from home.
The work is outside. Additions, patio covers, re-roofs, pools and hardscape crews have no reason to be indoors at all. See the pages for roofing, pool builders and landscape contractors.
You are living somewhere else during the job. With the house empty, the water may be shut off and nobody is home to let workers in.
Is one unit enough?
Nearly always. The state ratio is one toilet for every 20 workers or fraction of 20, and a remodel crew is far below that.
| Workers at the house on the busiest day | Toilets | Hand washing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1 single-user unit | Can be inside the unit |
| 5 to 20 | 1 | 1 hand-wash station outside the unit |
| 21 or more | 2 | 2 stations |
The first row covers most remodels. Under five workers, the washing rule (§1527) allows the hand washing to be inside the toilet. We recommend adding a hand-wash station so the crew has water, soap and paper towels. Once a fifth worker is on site, a separate hand-wash station is required outside the unit. A second-story addition during framing is the usual case.
The rule has an exception for mobile crews that have transportation to nearby toilets. Some small contractors rely on it, which in practice means workers leaving your job to drive to a gas station. Our Cal/OSHA guide explains the rule in full.
Where does the unit go at a house?
- On the driveway, to one side. This is the standard spot. The surface is firm and level, and our truck can pull up to it.
- Near the garage or side gate, so workers walk around the house, not through it.
- Door facing the house or the fence. From the street, neighbours see a plain side panel.
- On your own property, not at the curb. A unit in the street or on the sidewalk needs an encroachment permit from the city or county. Our permit guide has the details.
- Where the truck can reach it every week. The driver pumps with a hose from the truck. A unit behind a narrow side gate or deep in the backyard usually cannot be serviced.
- Away from the gutter. Keep it off the low end of a sloped driveway where runoff heads for the storm drain.
If the driveway is steep, tell us when you call. The unit has to sit level, so we may put it on the flat apron by the garage or on a level part of the front yard.
If you are also getting a dumpster, plan both at once. A roll-off takes most of one driveway bay. Dumpsters come from our sister company, Victory Dumpsters, and one call can set up both so they do not block each other or your garage.
What about my HOA and my neighbours?
Placing a portable toilet on private property for a home renovation usually does not need a city permit (see our porta potty permit guide), but an HOA or property manager can have its own rules. If your neighbourhood has an association, ask it before delivery:
- Does the remodel itself need architectural approval?
- Can a portable toilet sit on the driveway, and for how long?
- Does it need to be screened or kept a set distance from the street?
- Are there set hours for contractor trucks and deliveries?
Gated communities add one more step. In Canyon Lake, for example, the property owner has to authorize our truck at the gate for delivery and for every weekly service visit.
For neighbours, three things keep the peace: place the unit on the side of the driveway away from their front door, keep it off the shared property line, and tell them how long the job will run. Weekly service controls odour in normal use. In a summer heat wave, or with a larger crew, ask about a second visit each week.
How long will I need it?
As long as workers are coming to the house. Order it to arrive the day before demolition and keep it until the final punch list is done, not only until the bathroom works again. Your contractor's schedule is the best guide, and remodels often run past it.
Rentals bill in 28-day periods and there is no fixed end date. Call when the job is finished and we will pick up.
The price for a construction unit starts at $189 per 28 days. That includes the weekly pump, clean and restock. There is a delivery and pickup fee, and there are no fuel or environmental surcharges. See pricing.
Will it be clean enough for my family to use?
Every unit is pumped, washed, sanitized and restocked with toilet paper once a week. If your household will share the unit with the crew, tell us when you order. Options that help:
- Two units, one for the family and one for the crew.
- An ADA-accessible unit, which has a wider door and more floor space. It is easier for an older relative, or for a parent helping a small child.
- A separate hand-wash station with water, soap and paper towels.
- A lock. You can padlock a unit overnight with your own lock. Leave it unlocked, or give us the combination, on service day.
Other reasons to rent a porta potty at home
This page also covers residential rentals in general. Homeowners call us for:
- Backyard parties, graduations and family reunions, to keep guests out of the house. See private parties. Event rentals start at $189 per unit.
- Septic or sewer trouble, when the house toilets cannot be used until a repair is made. The phone is answered 24 hours a day for emergencies.
- Backyard projects such as an ADU or garage conversion.
- Large properties where the barn, workshop or arena is a long walk from the house.
The standard rental for home use is described on our standard units page.

Home remodel FAQ
Do I have to be home for delivery? Not if we know exactly where the unit goes. Mark the spot or describe it when you order.
Will the truck damage my driveway? The delivery and service trucks stay on the street or the driveway apron where possible, and the unit itself is light when empty. Tell us if you have new pavers or fresh concrete.
Can I let the crew use my bathroom and skip the rental? That is between you and your contractor. Think about a full workday, every day, for the length of the job, and about which room they would walk through to get there.
Does the unit smell? A unit serviced weekly and used by a small crew should not smell from the sidewalk. Heat and heavy use change that, and an extra service visit fixes it.
Can you deliver tomorrow? Usually. We offer same-day and next-day delivery, and we answer the phone from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
Do I need a permit? Not for a unit on your own driveway, in any local code we have reviewed. A unit in the street does need one. Check with your HOA separately.
