Porta Potty Rental for ADU Construction
An ADU build or garage conversion usually needs one porta potty for the length of the job, placed on the driveway or at the mouth of the side yard. The crew is small and the main house is occupied, so the unit keeps workers out of the family's bathroom from the first trench to the final inspection. Victory Portable Restrooms delivers from Murrieta. Construction units start at $189 per 28 days with weekly service included, plus a delivery and pickup fee.
Why are so many ADUs being built?
State law changed, and homeowners responded. The California Department of Housing and Community Development reports that ADU permits statewide rose from 1,336 in 2016 to 30,354 in 2024, and that ADUs were more than 26.6 percent of all homes permitted in California in 2024 (HCD ADU Handbook).
For anyone who rents portable toilets, that means a different kind of job site. An ADU is new residential construction, with a foundation, framing and full plumbing, but it happens in a backyard behind a house where people are living. The site has no room to spare and a family watching it every day.
What makes an ADU site different from other construction?
| ADU or garage conversion | Typical new home site | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Side yard or driveway only | Open lot |
| Who is on the property | Crew and the resident family | Crew only |
| Crew size | Small, with trades arriving one at a time | Larger, with trades overlapping |
| Where the unit goes | Driveway or front of side yard | Anywhere on the pad |
| Existing bathroom nearby | Yes, inside the main house, and off limits | None |
| Neighbours | A fence away on three sides | Often none yet |
That last column is why a general job site plan does not transfer. On an ADU, placement decides whether the rental works at all.
Where can the unit go when the backyard is tight?
The obvious idea is to put the portable toilet in the backyard next to the work. It usually cannot go there, for two reasons.
First, it has to get there. A side yard with a gas meter, an air conditioning condenser and a row of trash bins in it is often too narrow.
Second, it has to be pumped every week. The service driver works with a hose from the truck. A unit at the back of a deep lot is out of reach. The unit needs to sit within about 30 feet of where our service truck can park.
The placements that work, in order of preference:
- The driveway, on the side nearest the side-yard gate. Workers walk a few steps from the gate to the unit and never pass the front door. The truck services it from the driveway or the street.
- Just inside the side-yard gate, if the gate is wide and close to the street. The unit is hidden from the road and still within hose reach.
- The front yard on a level, firm spot when the driveway has to stay clear for material deliveries or the concrete pump.
- An alley or rear access, if the lot has one and a truck can use it.
Keep the unit on the property. A unit at the curb, on the sidewalk or in the parkway needs an encroachment permit from the city or county. See our porta potty permit guide.
Turn the door toward the house or the fence, and keep the unit off the side of the driveway that faces the nearest neighbour's windows. If your tract has an HOA, ask whether it limits where a unit can sit or for how long.
What is different about a garage conversion?
A garage conversion happens against the wall of an occupied home, sometimes with a shared door into the kitchen or laundry. Three things follow from that.
The driveway is the work zone. Everything that was in the garage is now on the driveway or in a storage container, the slab is being cut for plumbing, and material is stacked by the door. Pick the toilet's spot before the garage is emptied, or there will be nowhere left for it.
Parking is already gone. Losing the garage and half the driveway pushes the family's cars to the street. If a dumpster is coming too, plan all three together. Roll-offs come from our sister company, Victory Dumpsters, and we can set the toilet and the dumpster so that one driveway bay stays usable.
The house bathroom is right there. That is the temptation, and the reason to rent. With a unit outside, the door between the garage and the house stays closed and locked during the workday.
How many units does an ADU crew need?
One. The state rule sets one toilet and one washing station for every 20 workers or fraction of 20, and it has a specific exception for small crews: where there are fewer than five employees, a single all-gender toilet is sufficient (Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526). At that crew size the hand washing may be inside the unit (§1527).
Most days on an ADU fit that exception. The days that do not are the ones when trades overlap, such as the foundation pour or a framing push. If five or more workers will be on site, the washing station has to be outside the toilet and separate from it. A hand-wash station needs only a small patch of level ground.
Hand sanitizer alone does not meet the washing rule at any crew size. The detail is in our Cal/OSHA requirements guide.
How long do ADU projects run?
Plan for months, not weeks. A garage conversion is often the shortest because the shell exists. A detached ADU built from the ground up goes through every stage of a house: trenching, foundation, framing, roofing, rough plumbing and electrical, insulation, drywall, finishes and final inspection.
| Stage | Who is on site | Toilet notes |
|---|---|---|
| Demolition, trenching, foundation | Small crew, concrete truck or pump | Have the unit delivered before day one. Keep it clear of the pump truck's setup spot. |
| Framing and roofing | Largest crew of the job | Check whether the count reaches five. Add a wash station if so. |
| Rough trades and inspections | One or two trades at a time, with gaps | Keep the unit. Idle weeks still have inspectors and deliveries. |
| Drywall, finishes, fixtures | Small crews | Keep the unit until the ADU's own bathroom is finished and signed off. |
Because rentals bill every 28 days with no fixed term, a schedule that slips does not need a new contract. Call when the final inspection passes and we will pick up. The unit you ordered for month one stays in place and keeps getting serviced weekly.
What does it cost for an ADU build?
A construction portable toilet starts at $189 per 28 days. Weekly pumping, cleaning and restocking are included. There is a delivery and pickup fee. We do not add fuel or environmental surcharges.
As an example at the starting rate, a build that runs six 28-day periods comes to $1,134 in rental plus the delivery fee. Hand-wash stations are extra and are quoted when you call. Current prices are on the pricing page.
Should I add temporary fence?
Sometimes. An ADU site has open trenches and stacked material in a yard where children and pets live. If removing a section of fence for access leaves the backyard open to the street, a few panels of temporary fence close the gap until the permanent fence goes back. We arrange fence panels through our partners.
Where are ADUs being built near us?
We deliver to ADU builders and homeowners in Murrieta, Temecula, Menifee, Lake Elsinore, Riverside, Moreno Valley, Corona and Hemet. Each city and the county run their own ADU plan check, so confirm site rules with your building department. More cities are on the service areas page.

ADU and garage conversion FAQ
Can the unit sit in the backyard next to the ADU? Only if a unit can be rolled in and the pump hose can reach it from where the truck parks. On most lots the answer is no, and the driveway is the better spot.
Who usually rents it, the homeowner or the ADU builder? Either. Many ADU companies include it in their contract. Ask before you sign, and if it is not included, you can rent it directly.
Do we need an accessible unit? Federal accessibility standards exempt portable toilets used only by construction workers on a construction site (U.S. Access Board). A standard construction unit is the usual choice and has the smallest footprint.
The crew is only two people. Is a toilet still required? Yes. The small-crew exception reduces what is required to one unit. It does not remove the requirement. The exception for mobile crews with transportation to nearby toilets is narrow, and it means workers leaving the job to find one.
How soon can you deliver? Same-day and next-day delivery are available. We answer the phone from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
Will weekly service block my driveway? The visit is short. Tell us if cars need to leave at a set time in the morning. Service runs on a set route, which is how we keep pricing competitive. You can request a specific service day. If your site needs a day that requires a special trip, the price may change.
