Renting basics

What is a porta potty? A porta potty is a self-contained portable toilet with its own holding tank. It needs no water, sewer or power connection, so it can sit on a job site, a driveway or a field. Portable toilet, portable restroom and porta john all mean the same thing. See porta potty rental.

What kinds of units do you rent? We stock standard portable toilets, construction portable toilets, ADA-accessible units and hand-wash stations at our Murrieta yard. Restroom trailers and temporary fence are arranged through partners, and dumpsters come from our sister company. Start with standard units.

Can I rent a porta potty for just one day? Yes. Shorter rentals are available for special events, and event rentals start at $189 per unit. We deliver the day before or the morning of your event and pick up afterward or the next day, depending on the schedule. See event porta potty rental.

How long can I keep a rental? As long as the job runs. Construction rentals bill in 28-day cycles with weekly service included, and you end the rental with a phone call. Give us two business days' notice for pickup when you can. See construction porta potty rental.

How far ahead should I book? For events, book a week or more ahead when you can. Spring and fall weekends fill first. We take short-notice orders whenever units are available. Restroom trailers need at least 7 days' notice, and temporary fence has a 3-day lead time.

Can I get same-day delivery? We offer same-day and next-day delivery, and there is no fixed cutoff time. Every day is different. The earlier you call, the better the chance of same-day delivery. Have the address and placement spot ready. See service areas for how distance from the yard affects timing.

Pricing

How much does it cost to rent a porta potty? Construction units start at $189 per 28 days with weekly service included, plus a delivery and pickup fee. Event rentals start at $189 per unit. ADA-accessible units, hand-wash stations and extra service visits are quoted when you call. The pricing page has the breakdown.

Are delivery and pickup included? No. There is a delivery and pickup fee, quoted up front with the rental. We do not add fuel or environmental surcharges.

Is there a fee to move a unit? We can move a unit when we are on site for your regular service. If you need it moved sooner and we have to make a special trip, a relocation fee applies, and the amount depends on the location.

What does a porta potty cost for an event? Event rentals start at $189 per unit. The total depends on the number and type of units, how many days you run and whether units need servicing between days. Send your date, location and headcount through the quote form for a full figure.

How much does a restroom trailer cost? Trailers are quote-only. Our partner supplies a two-station trailer, and we need at least 7 days' notice. Prices vary widely with date, rental length, distance and extras such as a generator, so a published number would mislead most readers. See restroom trailer rental.

Can you provide a certificate of insurance? Yes. We provide certificates of insurance, including additional-insured certificates, on request.

Delivery and placement

Where can a porta potty be placed? On firm, level ground that our service truck can reach, clear of traffic lanes. Keep it away from storm drains: California stormwater guidance recommends about 50 feet from drainage where the site allows (CASQA WM-9). The unit needs to sit within about 30 feet of where our service truck can park.

Can it go on grass, gravel or a slope? Grass and gravel are fine if the ground is firm and reasonably flat. Slopes and low spots that turn to mud are not. Accessible units need level ground and a firm path a wheelchair can use.

Can a porta potty tip over in Santa Ana winds? An empty, exposed unit can. The same stormwater guidance says units should be secured against overturning in high wind (CASQA WM-9). On windy or exposed sites, ask us about staking or tying down the units.

What if a unit is tipped, vandalized or damaged? If a unit is tipped over or damaged, call us and we will reset, clean or replace it. The renter is responsible for damage beyond normal wear, and a service fee may apply.

Can I lock a unit overnight? You can padlock a unit overnight with your own lock. Leave it unlocked, or give us the combination, on service day.

Service and cleanliness

How often are porta potties serviced? Once a week on 28-day rentals, included in the price. Busy sites and hot weather may call for a second weekly visit, which you can add.

Can I choose my service day? Service runs on a set route, which is how we keep pricing competitive. You can request a specific service day. If your site needs a day that requires a special trip, the price may change.

Does Cal/OSHA set a service schedule? No. Cal/OSHA requires job site toilets to be kept clean and stocked but does not set a pumping schedule (8 CCR §1526).

What happens on a service visit? The driver pumps the holding tank, washes and sanitizes the interior, recharges the tank with fresh water and deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper. Hand-wash stations get fresh water, soap and paper towels.

Do porta potties smell? A unit that is serviced on schedule and not overloaded should not. Odor problems nearly always come from too few units for the number of users, or too long between pump-outs. If yours smells before service day, call and we will sort it out.

Do your units have hand sanitizer? No. Our units do not have hand sanitizer dispensers. We recommend adding a hand-wash station with water, soap and paper towels. Our stations are two-sided with a 22-gallon fresh water tank.

What happens to the waste? It is pumped into the service truck's tank and taken to an approved receiving facility. California law requires anyone who cleans chemical toilets to hold a registration from the local health officer (Health and Safety Code §117405).

Events

How many porta potties do I need for an event? It depends on the crowd and the hours. The Portable Sanitation Association International chart gives 5 units for 500 people over four hours and 9 units over eight hours (PSAI). Our calculator guide covers smaller and larger crowds.

How many for 100 guests? A common rule of thumb is about two units for a four-hour event and three for six to eight hours. Our calculator guide gives counts by crowd and hours. Plan at least one of them as an accessible unit if the public is invited.

Do I need more units if alcohol is served? Yes. PSAI says to add 10 to 20%, and San Bernardino County's health department says 40% (San Bernardino County). For a beer garden or winery event, plan toward the higher figure.

Do I need hand-wash stations at an event? For any event with food, yes. Riverside County's temporary food facility checklist calls for restrooms with approved hand washing within 200 feet of food booths, and vendors need their own hand-wash setup too (Riverside County Environmental Health). Put a station at each group of toilets.

Should a wedding have porta potties or a restroom trailer? A trailer suits a formal wedding at a venue with power, water, level ground and truck access. Standard units suit remote sites and tighter budgets. Many weddings use both. See weddings and the porta potty vs restroom trailer guide.

What about multi-day events? The planning charts assume no pumping during the event, so units need servicing between days. Murrieta's event application requires daily service on multi-day events (City of Murrieta). See festivals and concerts.

Construction and Cal/OSHA

How many porta potties does Cal/OSHA require per worker? One toilet for every 20 employees or fraction of 20 (8 CCR §1526). Twenty-one workers means two toilets. Count everyone on site on the busiest day, including subcontractors. The Cal/OSHA guide has the full rule.

What about a crew of fewer than five? One single-user toilet marked for all-gender use is enough, and on a site that small the hand washing may be inside the unit (8 CCR §1526, §1527).

Do I need a hand-wash station on a job site? Yes. Cal/OSHA requires one washing station per 20 employees with water, soap and single-use towels or a dryer, placed outside the portable toilet (8 CCR §1527). Sanitizer does not replace it, and our units do not have sanitizer dispensers.

Do I need a porta potty for a home remodel or pool build? If a contractor's employees are working there, the Cal/OSHA toilet rule applies to that contractor. A portable unit keeps crews out of your house and is the usual answer when the bathroom is being torn out. See home remodels and pool builders.

Do farms and vineyards have to provide toilets? Yes. California's field sanitation rule requires toilets and hand-washing facilities for hand-labor field workers, one per 20 workers, within a quarter-mile or five-minute walk (8 CCR §3457).

Permits

Do I need a permit for a porta potty on private property? Not normally. For a job site, a remodel or a small private gathering, the unit itself is not a permitted item in the local codes we reviewed. The permit attaches to the event or to the location. See the porta potty permit guide.

Can a porta potty go on the street or sidewalk? Only with an encroachment permit from the city, or from County Transportation in unincorporated areas. Murrieta, for example, requires one before placing an obstruction in a public place (Murrieta Municipal Code Ch. 15.54). Keeping the unit on your driveway avoids the question.

How early do I apply for an event permit? Temecula asks for at least 30 days. Menifee, Lake Elsinore and Wildomar ask for 60. Murrieta asks for 4 to 6 months for small events and 6 to 12 months for large ones, and unincorporated Riverside County requires 60 or 90 days depending on the event. Links to each form are in the permit guide.

Does my HOA allow a porta potty during a remodel? That is up to the HOA. Many allow one during permitted work but set rules on placement, screening or how long it may stay. Ask the management company before delivery.

Accessibility

How many ADA-accessible units does an event need? The California Building Code requires 5% of the units in each cluster, and never fewer than one, to be accessible (CBC §11B-213.2, Exception 3, in the Division of the State Architect's advisory manual, PDF). Murrieta and Lake Elsinore ask for 10% on their event forms. See ADA-accessible units.

Does a construction site need an ADA unit? Federal accessibility standards exempt portable toilets used only by construction personnel on a construction site (U.S. Access Board). Sites open to the public are different.

Other services

Can I get a dumpster, fence and porta potty from one company? You can get them on one quote with one contact. We supply the toilets, sister company Victory Dumpsters supplies roll-off dumpsters, and partners supply the fence. See job site services, dumpster rental and temporary fence rental.

Do you own the restroom trailers? No. We arrange them through a partner company, which supplies a two-station trailer, and we quote each one individually. See restroom trailer rental.

Where do you deliver? The Temecula Valley and western and central Riverside County. We do not currently serve the Coachella Valley. All 39 communities are on the service areas page, and our yard details are on about us and contact.
