Porta Potty Rental for Roofing Contractors
Roofing jobs are short, the crews are large for the size of the site, and on a re-roof somebody is living under the work. Victory Portable Restrooms delivers porta potties and hand-wash stations to roofing contractors from our Murrieta yard, same-day or next-day, and our sister company can drop a 20 yard dumpster for the tear-off on the same job. Construction units start at $189 per 28 days with weekly service, plus a delivery and pickup fee.
Does a two-day re-roof really need a porta potty?
Not always, and we will say so.
Cal/OSHA's toilet rule for construction has an exception for "mobile crews having readily available transportation to nearby toilet facilities" (8 CCR §1526(e)). A small crew doing a one-day repair or a quick tear-off and dry-in, with a truck on site and a public restroom a couple of minutes away, may reasonably rely on that. The rule does not define "nearby," so the call is yours to make and to defend.
A unit earns its place on a roofing job when any of these is true:
| Job | Typical length | Unit worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Leak repair, small patch | Hours to 1 day | Rarely |
| Single-family re-roof, comp shingle | 1 to 3 days | Sometimes: larger crews, no restroom close by, or the homeowner asks |
| Tile lift and relay, single-family | Several days to 2 weeks | Yes |
| HOA or condo re-roof, building after building | Weeks to months | Yes |
| Apartment or commercial re-roof | Weeks | Yes |
| New-construction roofing on a tract | Ongoing | Usually covered by the builder's units. Confirm with the GC |
Lengths above are typical ranges.
The honest arithmetic on a short job: getting off a two-story roof, driving to a gas station and getting back up is a 20-minute trip. Multiply by eight roofers and the unit pays for itself in a day. It also means nobody knocks on the homeowner's door.
How many units for a roofing crew?
| Workers on site | Toilets | Hand-wash stations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1 | 1 (may be inside the unit) |
| 5 to 20 | 1 | 1, outside the unit |
| 21 to 40 | 2 | 2 |
| 41 to 60 | 3 | 3 |
That is the Cal/OSHA minimum: one of each per 20 employees or fraction of 20 (§1526, §1527). Roofing crews commonly run five or more, which is the point where the hand-wash station must stand outside the toilet and not be attached to it. On jobs with adhesives, primers, coatings or hot asphalt, the washing rule also calls for facilities near the work (§1527(a)(2)).
On an HOA or commercial project where the crew is spread over several buildings, one unit at the far end of the complex does not help. Split units between work areas or have us move them as the job advances. Our unit count guide and Cal/OSHA guide go further.
What does the heat rule require, and where do toilets fit?
A roof in an inland Riverside County summer is one of the hottest workplaces there is. Cal/OSHA's heat illness prevention standard, 8 CCR §3395, applies to all outdoor places of employment. In summary, it requires:
- Water. Fresh, cool drinking water, free, as close as practicable to the work. Where it is not plumbed, enough at the start of the shift for one quart per employee per hour, or a way to replenish it.
- Shade. Shade must be present when the temperature exceeds 80°F, with room for the workers on rest breaks.
- Cool-down rests. Workers must be allowed a preventative cool-down rest in the shade of at least five minutes when they feel the need.
- High-heat procedures at 95°F and above. These apply to named industries, and construction is one of them.
- A written plan, plus training and close observation of new workers while they acclimatize.
Read the section itself for the detail. What it does not contain is any toilet requirement. Toilets and washing are covered by §1526 and §1527.
The link between the two is practical, not legal. Eight roofers drinking a quart an hour need a restroom often. If the nearest one means a ladder and a drive, people drink less to avoid the trip, which is the opposite of what the heat rule is trying to achieve. A unit at the bottom of the ladder removes that reason. If the site has afternoon shade, tell us and we will set the unit there.
Where does the unit go on a re-roof?
On an occupied single-family home the driveway is crowded on tear-off day: the dumpster, the material delivery or boom truck, and the crew's vehicles. Plan it in this order:
- Dumpster first, close to the eave where the tear-off comes down.
- Material delivery path kept open for the supplier's truck.
- Toilet at the edge of the driveway or the front corner of the lot, outside the drop zone. Nothing should be coming off the roof above the unit's door.
- Service truck reach. On a job longer than a week, our driver needs to get a hose to the unit.
Keep the unit off the street and sidewalk unless you have an encroachment permit from the city or county. Our permit guide has the contacts. In HOA communities and mobile home parks, ask the manager where units and dumpsters are allowed before delivery.
Can I get the dumpster and the toilet together?
Yes. Our sister company Victory Dumpsters supplies the roofing dumpster, and for roofing tear-off the size is the 20 yard dumpster. Shingles, tile and underlayment are dense, so tell them the roof material and the number of squares when you book, and they will confirm the load limits.
Ordering both together means one conversation about where each item sits on the driveway and when each arrives. For a short residential re-roof, the usual plan is dumpster and toilet delivered the afternoon before tear-off and picked up when the job is done. See dumpster rental and job site services.
How does it work on HOA and commercial re-roofs?
These are the roofing jobs where a 28-day rental fits naturally. A condo community or shopping center re-roof runs for weeks, the crew is larger, and the property manager will not open the clubhouse or tenant restrooms to a roofing crew.
- Weekly service is included. The driver pumps, cleans and restocks each unit and refills the wash station. A second weekly visit is available in hot months.
- Units move with the work. As you finish one building and start the next, call us. We can move a unit when we are on site for your regular service. If you need it moved sooner and we have to make a special trip, a relocation fee applies, and the amount depends on the location.
- Paperwork for the property manager. We provide certificates of insurance, including additional-insured certificates, on request.
- Staging areas. If you fence off a material and dumpster area in a parking lot, we can arrange temporary fence panels through our partners.
What do short jobs cost?
The construction rate starts at $189 per 28 days with weekly service, plus a delivery and pickup fee. No fuel or environmental surcharges. Job site rentals bill in 28-day periods. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.
Roofers who run back-to-back jobs sometimes keep one unit on rental and have us move it from address to address. Ask us to price that against separate deliveries.
Which areas do you serve?
We deliver to roofing jobs in Murrieta, Temecula, Menifee, Sun City, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Perris and Moreno Valley, along with the rest of our service area. This page is part of our construction porta potty rental section.
Roofing contractor FAQ
Can you deliver the day before tear-off? Yes. We offer same-day and next-day delivery, and we answer the phone 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
Is hand sanitizer enough for a roofing crew? No. Cal/OSHA requires a washing station with water, soap and single-use towels or a dryer. With five or more workers it has to be a separate station outside the unit.
I am the roofing sub on a new build. Do I bring my own unit? Usually the general contractor's units cover every trade on site. Confirm that with the GC, and confirm the count still works on the days your crew is there.
Do roofing job units need to be ADA-accessible? Portable toilets used only by construction personnel are exempt from the federal accessibility standards (U.S. Access Board).
What if debris lands on the unit or it gets damaged? If a unit is tipped over or damaged, call us and we will reset, clean or replace it. The renter is responsible for damage beyond normal wear, and a service fee may apply. Keeping it out of the drop zone avoids the problem.
What if I need a unit on a Sunday because a job ran over? Call. The same number is answered 24 hours a day for emergencies.
