Porta Potty Rental for Christmas Tree Lots

A Christmas tree lot needs restrooms for about four weeks, from the days before Thanksgiving until the last trees go. Victory Portable Restrooms delivers portable toilets, an ADA-accessible unit and a hand-wash station before you open, services them every week while you sell and picks them up as soon as the lot closes. We are based in Murrieta and serve lots across the Temecula Valley and Riverside County.

Why does a tree lot need its own porta potty?

Because the people working it cannot leave. A tree lot is staffed from morning until well after dark, seven days a week, and customers come on weekends and in the evenings after work and school. Staff need a restroom on the lot, not one in a store across the parking lot that closes before you do. Many lots also keep someone on site overnight, sometimes in a travel trailer, to watch the stock.

Customers are the second reason. Families take their time choosing a tree, and a child who needs a restroom ends the visit.

How long is the rental, and how does service work?

Most lots open around Thanksgiving and close before Christmas, so plan on about four weeks; you give us the exact dates. That fits our 28-day rental, with the unit pumped, cleaned and restocked with toilet paper once a week. Hand-wash stations get water, soap and towels on the same visit.

  • Schedule service before the weekend. A Thursday or Friday visit means the units start Saturday clean. Service runs on a set route, which keeps pricing competitive. You can request a specific day, but a day that needs a special trip may change the price.
  • Add a visit for your busiest weekend. Extra visits are available.
  • Lock up at night. You can padlock a unit overnight with your own lock. Leave it unlocked, or give us the combination, on service day.
  • Call if something goes wrong. We are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and the same number is answered 24 hours for emergencies. If a unit is tipped over or damaged, we will reset, clean or replace it. The renter is responsible for damage beyond normal wear, and a service fee may apply.

How many units does a Christmas tree lot need?

Fewer than most events, because customers come and go in small groups.

Lot Starting point
Small lot, 2 to 4 staff, steady traffic 1 ADA-accessible unit and 1 hand-wash station
Lot with a staff member or trailer on site overnight Add 1 standard portable toilet near the trailer
Large lot with 6 or more staff and busy weekend crowds 2 standard units, 1 ADA unit and 1 or 2 hand-wash stations
Lot with a Santa visit, hot cocoa or a food truck Size for the event crowd with the porta potty calculator

These are our own starting points, not a rule. If a neighboring store or church lets your staff and customers use its restrooms during all your open hours, you may need less. Get that in writing.

Every group of portable toilets open to the public should include at least one accessible unit. The California Building Code requires that 5% of clustered units, and never fewer than one, be accessible (CBC §11B-213.2). See ADA-accessible units.

Our units do not have hand sanitizer dispensers. Staff handle trees and cash all day, so we recommend a hand-wash station beside the toilets.

Where should the portable toilets go on the lot?

Most tree lots sit on a shopping center parking lot, a church lot or a vacant parcel. Plan the spot before the trees arrive.

  1. Near the cashier or staff area, not in the tree rows.
  2. Under light. The lot is busy after dark. Put units where your string lights or the parking lot lights reach them.
  3. Out of the loading lane where tree trucks unload and customers back up to have trees tied on.
  4. Within reach of our truck. The unit needs to sit within about 30 feet of where our service truck can park. Keep stacked trees and fencing out of that path.
  5. On level ground. Parking lots slope toward drains. Pick a level stall and keep the units back from the drain inlet and off any painted accessible parking stalls.
  6. Staked if exposed. On windy or exposed sites, ask us about staking or tying down the units.

If the property owner asks for a certificate of insurance before you set up, we provide certificates of insurance, including additional-insured certificates, on request.

Do I need a permit for a Christmas tree lot?

In most cities, yes. Seasonal sales lots are a temporary use of the property, and the fire department has its own say. The portable toilets need no separate permit, but the city may ask where they go on your site plan.

Jurisdiction What the official source says
City of Temecula Lists "Christmas tree, pumpkin, and seasonal agricultural product lots/sales" as a temporary use. Apply at least 30 days before you open; review takes about three weeks. The page tells applicants to contact the city's Fire Prevention team to find out whether fire permits are required (City of Temecula, Temporary Use Permits).
City of Murrieta The zoning code covers Christmas tree, pumpkin and other seasonal product sales lots: up to 180 days a year at the director's discretion, an electrical permit if the lot is energized, and lighting shielded from nearby homes and streets. The director may require sanitary facilities as a condition (Murrieta Municipal Code Ch. 16.70). The business license fee schedule lists a seasonal sales category (Murrieta FY27 fees).
City of Moreno Valley The Major Temporary Use Permit packet names Christmas tree lots as an example, limits them to 30 days per calendar year and includes a condition that portable toilets be provided for employees and customers and meet ADA standards (Moreno Valley Major TUP packet).

Timing for 2026. Thanksgiving falls on November 26. A Temecula lot opening the day after needs its application in by about October 28 to meet the 30-day lead time.

Fire rules. Fire prevention offices commonly set conditions for tree lots, such as fire extinguishers, no open flames or heaters without approval, flame-retardant tents and rules for temporary wiring. Ask the fire agency for your address before you set up.

Other cities follow their own temporary use rules. The porta potty permit guide links each city's forms.

When should I book?

Early in November, so we can deliver on the day you start setting up and staff have a restroom while they unload the first trees. We take short-notice orders whenever units are available, with same-day and next-day delivery. Every day is different. The earlier you call, the better the chance of same-day delivery.

At the end of the season, tell us your closing date when you book and give us two business days' notice for pickup when you can.

What does it cost?

Event rentals start at $189 per unit. We charge a delivery and pickup fee, with no fuel or environmental surcharges. ADA units, hand-wash stations and extra service visits are quoted when you call. See pricing for how our rates work.

Who rents porta potties for tree lots?

  • Non-profit and church-run lots. Youth groups, service clubs and churches run many local lots as fundraisers, often on their own property or a donated parking lot. For a church fall festival or Christmas event, see church and school events.
  • Seasonal operators. Businesses that run a lot every year on a leased parking lot, often with an overnight trailer.

A lot with a tree lighting, Santa photos or a weekend market is closer to a small event. See community events or markets.

Do you also supply fencing and a dumpster?

To fence the lot perimeter, we arrange temporary fence panels through our partners, with a 3-day lead time. For end-of-season cleanup of unsold trees, trimmed branches, netting and pallets, roll-off dumpsters are available from our sister company, Victory Dumpsters. Ask about bundle pricing when you order portable toilets together with a dumpster or fence.
